Welcome 2011 - The Year of Connection

For 2011, I have chosen to focus on connection and connecting. 2010 left me feeling rather disconnected, especially from myself. So, this year, I want to reconnect with myself, deepen my connections with my husband and children, spend more time in nature, and reconnect with my spirituality.

Here's a breakdown of the micro-actions for each (Thank you to the book
Stop Screaming at the Microwave: How to Connect Your Disconnected Life for the idea of micro-actions. :) )

1. Myself

- Make a list of things that recharge me. Do 2 or more of these a day. (Journal, dance, move, sketch, paint, etc.)
- Get away on my own (sans kiddos and hubby) at least every other month for a few hours or more.
- Respect my body through awareness of what I eat, movement, sleep, and respecting what it needs by taking time to tune in with it before bed.
- Making it a point to really pause when feeling overwhelmed or rushed, to just breathe regardless of that "voice" that tells me I don't have the time too. (Wait... Think... Count...)
- Connection with my inner child through laughter, play, dance, exploring (planning a few adventures), reading more, sketching and painting.
-Create a list of challenges, and determine how and when to complete them, including a big one I've been pondering.

2 Family
- Daily hugs and "I love yous" with each with a connection to the eyes and a pause to focus.

Hubby - Plan an overnight trip sans kiddos this year.
- Go on at least 3 dates this year - without the kiddos.
- Making a conscious effort to really connect with each other at least once a week.
- Do something special to celebrate our 10 year anniversary.

Kiddos - Plan special Mommy and kiddo dates.
- Get down to their level to listen, making eye contact.
- Create a new bedtime ritual.
- Choose to connect over "to do".

3 Nature- Reconnect with nature by aiming to spend 5 minutes a day (at least) outside or focused looking outside (window).
- When outside, taking time to engage my senses: breathe it in, really look at it, listen, feel it.
- Sketch and draw it.

4. Spirituality
- Remember my blessings, count them often, and bask in gratitude.
- Really listen and respect those "pings" and feel them out if I doubt them.
- Surrender my fears over, be open to receiving and new ideas.
- Let go of perfection, and focus on connection.

To Complete for the year :
- Clean up and declutter the basement.
- Find a good doctor and get a physical.
- Find new dentist.
- Plan something special for our 10 year.

Reflection on 2010

In 2010 I have realized a quite a bit:

- I have not been taking the best care of myself, and it's taken a toll. I am, however, very aware of this.
- I have not been eating the best. I am also aware of this.
- I
have some seriously amazing people and friends in my life who've amazed me and supported me beyond expectations, hope, and dreams. There are some really great people in my life.
- I took a chance and found a new "home".
- I have been making the most of quite a few things in my life, and it's been great.
- Creating personal policies is a good thing.
- We took a chance, and had an amazing, simple, yet rich and thoroughly enjoyable month and holiday in December. It was perfect for us.
- I can never seem to get enough of PJ days. I love them.
- I gained a new, truer perspective in a few aspects in my life - and though some were painful, in the end, it's been a blessing.

- I've become more aware of the blessings in my life.
- Reading, journaling, painting and crafting bring me joy - and I would like to do more of these.
- I have been feeling disconnected from quite a few things. It's time to reconnect I think.

2010 has brought sorrow, joys, delights, disappointments, and a bevy of emotions to go with the ride. I've almost felt as though it's been a year of stagnation in many ways. Leaves me feeling rather positive about 2011 at least. :) Which reminds me... will I create a focus for 2011? Or will I venture something a bit different. I need to ponder this for a bit.

For 2010, this is what I planned to focus on, and which, as you can see, I didn't really do such a great job of it:

1. Myself .
I honor myself and recognize that I deserve time to regroup. I am taking time out for me so that I can be a better mom and wife. I can do this through massages, time with friends that really nurture my soul and help to relax me, getting out of the house, reflexology, and doing things I truly enjoy - even if it's going someplace where I can read or paint. <-Looking over the year, I realized that I did more of this than I thought, yet still realized that what I was doing, wasn't enough. I did do the massages and spent some amazing time with good friends. However, I have learned that I need to do things on a weekly basis.

I exercise on a regular basis, focusing mainly on strength training with a side of yoga, walking, dancing, pilates, and cardio. <-I slacked off on this big time, but picked it up again, then it slid, then picked it up again. I'm going into the New Year exercising though. :)

I am eating healthier by starting clean eating and trying new recipes and foods. <-A good plan, that went awry. Very, very awry.

I plan to get a physical and eye exam this year. <-Eye exam, yes. Physical, put it off and still haven't found a doctor I like.

2 Finances <-Room for improvement.
Buy only what we really need. If we don't need it, we won't get it. <-Um... well, in terms of big things we stuck to this... other things... we could've done better... Continue to save up. <- We've actually gone into savings a bit this year. Donate to Heifer.org.<-This is on hold for the moment.

3 SimplifyI'm taking it to the next level. <-I changed my mind.
- Stuff - Declutter and purge project throughout the entire house. Organize. Something comes in, something goes out. <-We started this wholeheartedly in January. And then it pittered off as things came up, life happened, and we decided to spend out time doing other things - like traveling and time with friends. We didn't get the Good Will pile out until summer, and within a week, there was another pile... this time with leftover flooring bits, and there are still boxes we need to go through, as it's not all Good Will stuff. But, maybe it should be.
- Time - New calendar with less space, thus less room to schedule things. Keep scheduling to a minimum. Respect boundaries and keep things uncomplicated. <-Oh! Oh! Score on this one for the most part! We really rocked it for the month of December. We did have quite a bit going on in the Autumn, but a good chunk was for Squeak's therapy.
- Homeschooling - Make time to breathe. Determine what is really important. <-This one still needs work. We still haven't found a good balance. We did stick to what we felt was most important though. At least... I think...
- Food - Clean eating. <-Well, we made some of the recipes...

4. Living consciously with awareness and joy.
I am slowing down and stopping to smell the flowers. I am present in the moment. I enjoy the moments and life. I am basking in laughter, gratitude and joy, and I am willing to encourage, inspire and share these with others.<-I have had moments of this through the year. It wasn't a constant though. And really, I'm okay with that, because I've made the most of those moments I've been aware of.

I continue:
-to respect my inner voice and listen to it.<-I have indeed gotten better with this...
- to hear and listen to what I need. <-and this...
- to bask in joy and gratitude.
<-and this...
- to maintain a home environment of peace, love, nurturing and joy. <-this one could be better

To Complete:
- Get Information book updated and completely <-Didn't even start this.
- Huge decluttering/purge of the house <-Started it, and completely lost momentum when spring hit.
- Find a good doctor and get a physical <-That would be a no.
- Get eye exam and new glasses <-Score!

A Monthly Birthday Celebration

This weekend, I shall celebrate another birthday. Pook, ensures me that it will be the "best birthday ever", for in the eyes of a 7YO, each birthday is better than the next. And, I happen to agree with her. She is quite smart you see.

She also informed me that I should celebrate it the entire month. (I mentioned she was a smart one!) So, I decided that I would. I'm taking this month to relax and enjoy my family. I will not be formally homeschooling. I plan to spend time at a pool or two (there is something about water in the summer). Enjoy the summer breezes (it's been heavenly this week). Play lots of games (someone is learning checkers). Read for enjoyment as well as to learn. And to take the time to pause, breathe, and enjoy things like cooking and food prep.

Squeak has been having a lot of break throughs, so I want to make sure that we take the time to nurture and celebrate how far she's come, and how close she is. I want to give her attention as she works on her sensory issues. She's been inspired by a new friend, and I don't want to loose that. I also want to make sure Pook is getting her fair share of attention as well.

So, I'm listening to my heart and slowing down. I want to savor things - life, moments, food, and people for a while. I want to take the time to walk slowly, breathe slowly, do things without feeling like I "have to" or feeling rushed. I want to box this feeling of slowness up and give it to you my dear readers as a gift.

I want time to think, to be, to figure out what I want to do with my life and what is currently happening in my life. I don't know if changes will be made. I hope to make a few. I do know, that I'm treasuring this month. I'm looking at it with the wonder and joy that Pook does.

March Mindfulness

March has always been a bittersweet month for me. It's the month when I celebrate the birth of my father and brother, and my grandfather until he passed. It's also the birthdays of two other sweet friends. It contains the spring equinox, bringing us one step closer to April and spring.

It has also been the month of letting go. Two of my grandparents let go of life in this month, and my husband's grandfather as well. Last year, I witnessed the letting go of a friendship before my eyes, that resulted in me letting go and stepping back.

And thus, I've always watched it approach with a strange anticipation and fearfulness. This year, I want to associate it with something more positive. So, I'm dubbing it "Mindful March" or instead of March Madness, we can have March Mindfulness.

I'm not sure yet, how I want to celebrate this month. I am thinking of capturing photos, which help me to slow down. And finding ways to be fully present in the various areas of my life. Perhaps, I'll commit to blogging about it. We shall see...

It looks as though I'm not the only one focusing on mindfulness this month either. (I can't help it, after I thought of it, I had to google it to see if I was the only one to connect March and Mindfulness.) Shambala Sun appears to be focusing on this topic as well for their March 2010 issue.

Relflections on 2009

2009 has been an incredible year. I've made and reconnected with some wonderful people. I let go, and in return made room for something so much better. I've realized many things about myself and relationships in my life.

I've doubted myself, and felt that I wasn't good enough, only to rise from the ashes and realize, that I'm not only good enough, I'm a mighty fine person with a big heart.

It's been a year of realizations, adventure, and stepping out of my comfort zone. All good things, I assure you.

In purple are my comments about each focus I'd planned for this year. It's always amusing to look back on what I've written. I managed to accomplish most of these. Not happy with a few of these though.

1. I am honoring myself.
I am changing my thinking so that it is more positive. I release and let go of negative thoughts and relationships. I create a positive environment to thrive.<-Done.

I am eating more nutritiously for myself and family. (We are cutting out high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. We are increasing our vegetable and fruit intake. We are eating more fresh and less processed foods.)<-We started this journey... now, we're going to up it a notch I think.

I am moving and exercising regularly. (yoga, walking, dancing, pilates) I am encouraging and supporting hubby in doing this too. <-Done, although not happy with where I've been the last few weeks.

2. Living consciously with awareness and joy.

I am willing to be present in the moment, and to really just enjoy the moments and life. I am basking in laughter, gratitude and joy, and I am willing to encourage, inspire and share these with others.<-This was a bit of a challenge. I need to regroup on this.

3 Finances - spend wisely and consciously.
We are putting more into savings, spending wisely, and eliminating expenses where able.<-Well... this year we spent more than we'd have liked. So, I'm not happy with this.

4 Simplicity
I am keeping things simple by saying no when needed, respecting my boundaries, and keeping things uncomplicated. <-Done for the most part. I keep up with keeping out the clutter and maintaining that which might come in.<-Didn't keep up with this as much as I'd like. Got a bit derailed. Have a new perspective as well.

5 Honoring Others
I am enhancing my relationships through encouragement, nurturing, love and joy. I forgive myself and others for not meeting expectations. <-Done. Actually managed to reconnect with some amazing people.

I am looking into places to donate to. Currently, we donate to http://www.heifer.org/. I am looking into http://www.kiva.org/. Suggestions are welcome.<-Done. Donated to heifer. Not so sure about Kiva though... maybe because could find anyone I was comfortable lending too.

I continue:
-to be aware of the blessings in my life, and continue my connection with appreciation and gratitude.<-Done.
-to incorporate internal rhythms with life's rhythms. Learning to listen to what I need. Listening to my intuition. <-Done. Took until the end of this year... and I'm there.
- to maintain a home environment of peace, love, nurturing and joy.<-Had a few rough patches, however, and overall, think I did pretty good with this.

To Complete:
- Get a shed for out back <-Done.
- Create play area in the back <-Done.

Let's Do It

It's that time of year again. Only a few more days until 2010 begins, and I'm feeling the urge to purge on many levels.

In terms of the house, I want to go through every nook and cranny and just let it go. Too long I've been holding on to things "just in case" and now I realize, that this is more that just decluttering for me. It's about making space in my life, daring to let go of things so that I can make "make space for what really matters - old or new" (as a good friend wrote). In a way too, it's taking a step in faith - trusting that I'll be provided for on some level.

In terms of my body, I've been eating foods that I don't even like, that don't make me feel good. Add to that my youngest's food allergies, and I'm thinking it's time to purge the pantry, to make room for the good stuff. Maybe even purge the cook books too.

In terms of homeschooling, we've been hitting the books hard, and sacrificing afternoons of reading and spontaneous art projects that haven't been "planned". It's time to find that balance and figure out what exactly I want to do. It's time to purge and release what isn't working.

In terms of time, I've been spending too much of it in ways that I'd rather be spending doing something else. So, I'm hoping to figure out ways to save time and make the most of it, and eventually, find the courage to purge a few time-sucking things to boot.

So, starting tomorrow, it begins. I'm taking advantage of this mood. Anyone want to jump aboard?

Let's do it.

Slowing down.

It's the last day of September. We've worked hard this month with homeschooling, working, entertaining visitors, getting through illnesses, dealing with some unexpected information.

I've found myself feeling a bit lost, overwhelmed, and thoughtful as I process the events of the last month, and I realize that it's time to slow down, relish in awareness, nurture myself and family and create some much needed serenity.

As the chill sets in, I've found myself with a desire to walk outdoors, rake leaves, play in the wind. I want to take the time to cook up the garden harvest of brussel sprouts and acorn squash, to cultivate a delectable fall meal from scratch instead of heating up leftovers. I want to make the most of these darkening evenings with my family.

I'm noticing I "want" a lot of things lately, and that I'm looking for "something" to help me feel better - from decluttering, to new clothes - mostly material things. Thus, it's time to quiet down, and focus on what I have and what I'm grateful for.

And perhaps, dear readers, I'll bring you along for the ride.

Journey to the Sea

They say the journey begins with a single step, and ours did indeed, though the key part was the crossing of a bridge. The weather was foggy, so you could only see so far. It reminded me of how we needed to stay in the present moment, and focus on what was in front of us, as opposed to where we were going or what was ahead.

I think I smiled the entire vacation. My heart was full. I was with my family. I was visiting family and meeting friends of old and new. My heart was full, bursting with joy and gratitude. I found myself enjoying everything - the car ride, the kids, the people, the views, the food - it was heaven. I made the most of each moment, treasuring with all of my senses.

Gifts can be wrapped up in packages and tied up in string, or they can be wrapped in what you least expect. Everywhere I turn I discovered something sweet (and not just the chocolate!). We spent time with some amazing people. Even hubby enjoyed himself (and that is a rare thing when it involves new people).

When visiting my mom, she sent the kids on a radish hunt. She'd picked two, then had them search for the leaves in the garden where they got to pick more. She took the time to set up a feast in her part of the house, and fed us throughout the day, until my brother came in, and fed us more.

I found that I was not only fed on the physical level. My spirit, my very soul felt nurtured and loved throughout the week. We were able to see a few friends (sorry if we didn't get to see more of you - we only had so much time!), and even though some plans fell through (thanks to work and flash floods), everything still fell into place.

I found that when I just enjoyed what happened, when I made the most of events, people, things, and feelings, there seemed to be some type of pattern or plan in place. So, we embraced it and went with it.

Eventually we made our way to the beach. The beach has always been healing for me. There is something about the waves, the ocean itself, and the sand. I always need to say hello, and to listen. I like to stand at the edge, and let the waves kiss my toes and embrace my feet. Joy filled me, traveled through me. I wanted to dance, even go into the waves and let the water baptize me with joy and contentment. You can almost let things go with the tide, to be taken away into the oceans depths, and not have to worry about them.

We wondered how Pook would react to the water and sand this time. She loved it. It was a joy to watch her play in the sand and the waves. She made a new friend, and we made new friends. There was an overflow of gratitude on so many levels. There was full, total, and complete relaxation. And laughter, oh the laughter!

We found that time was relative. We stayed up until the wee morning hours indulging in chit-chat, chocolates and pomegranate margaritas. There were rum and cokes, 10 layer cakes, mini do-nuts ;), and other delights to tease the tast buds.

The environment was laid back and loving. The people were kind, generous, interested, interesting, and overall wonderful. There is something about being able to be with people who just take you as you are. People with whom you can let down your guard and just be yourself without worry. People whom you can laugh with, and share precious moments with.

We made some incredible memories. We had an awesome time. My heart is filled with gratitude for the people, the moments, the fun, the laughter - ALL of it.

Thank you. I am basking in blessings.

Reflections on 2008

2008 was a wild ride of a year. We started it off discovering that I was pregnant with Pookii, then jaunting off to Disney Land for a week. We returned with the lots of wonderful memories and the flu.

Pook was enrolled in a Montessori class and loved it. We spent the summer getting the house prepped for our new arrival, homeschooling, and spending summer days swimming at the pool and treasuring our family until Pookii's arrival in August.

Pookii arrived in style with an incredible birth story, and surrounded with lots of love and dear friends. She fits right in with our little mix. She's changed our lives since day 1, and helped us to grow as individuals and a family.

With all the additions, there were some losses as my grandmother died and my FIL was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It made for an interesting year. As for 2008's focus, let's see:

I wanted to focus on:

1. Living consciously with awareness and joy.
Being present in the moment, and to really just enjoy the moments and life. To laugh more and be more joyful. Did this.

Eating more nutritiously for myself and family. Moving and exercising more regularly. We've only just started doing this more religiously.

Enhancing my relationships with my husband, daughter, and family through encouragement, nurturing, love and joy.Did this.

2 Finances - spend wisely and consciously.
To put more into savings, spend wisely, and eliminate expenses where able. Did this and would like to eliminate more expenses.

3 Simplicity
To keep things simple by saying no when needed, respecting my boundaries, and keeping things uncomplicated. Keep up with keeping out the clutter. Did this, and enjoyed it too!

To Continue:

-To be aware of the blessings in my life, and continue my connection with appreciation and gratitude. Did this.
-To incorporate internal rhythms with life's rhythms. Learning to listen to what I need. Listening to my intuition. Did this.
- The home environment of peace, love, nurturing and joy. Did this.

To Complete:
- Trip to Disney World Did this.
- Backyard fence Did this.
- Stairs on back porch Did this.

Wow. I actually did what I focused on. Perhaps I do need to create some focus for 2009, just to keep track of things. Hmmm.

Enjoying the unexpected

I used to really enjoy traditions. The past few years we celebrated New Year's Eve with a traditional tarot reading for the new year, and listing what we wanted to release and embrace. This year, we drank Christmas mead and played Wii. We actually even stayed awake until midnight (thought we were asleep by 12:01 am.

It was only fitting that 2008 end with the same unexpectedness and possibilities it was filled with. 2008 was wild, amazing, challenging, and exciting.

This year, instead of setting up expectations, we are embracing possibilities and welcoming new things. Instead of over planning, we're leaving things open.

Perhaps I'll get around to writing a more detailed reflection of 2008. As for 2009, I haven't really made an resolutions. Perhaps I'll get around to pondering them and listing them out for you. However, it's entirely I may not. ;)

Reflections on 2007

It's been an interesting year filled with many lessons and blessings. Looking back on my focus for the year, I can say that I have not meet everything completely, but I did manage to focus on quite a few things.

There were 4 things I chose to focus on for 2007:
  • To live consciously - Yes, overall. As for the details... :)
  • To make it a point to enjoy life more -Yes
  • To continue to create a home environment that radiates contentment, peace, love, nurturing, and joy -Exceedingly YES!
  • To spend more time outdoors -More than in the past, but would've liked to have done more.
Overall, I stayed focused on the main things. As for the details...

I would definitely say that I am living more consciously. I have totally been aware of my blessings, and in the past year I've gone from the desire to move, to completely embracing and falling in love with our current house.

Though I am living a bit more greenly, I'm not nearly living as greenly as I could be. I was not able, nor willing to follow through with the compact pledge which ended up being more time consuming and challenging than I thought. Though, there is a part of me wishing I'd stuck with it. However, realistically, it would be too much at this time.

Eating healthier as a family proved to slide in a big way. I'm still trying to figure that one out.
And, I've been conscious of spending and more aware, but still spending too much. I am consciously aware of what I eat though. (Even if it is a chocolate bar. :)

In the big picture, I am so much more aware of things and how I do things. It's definitely a process, one I'll tweak for next year's focus, but one that's definitely worth it.

In regards to enjoying life - yeah. Definitely been doing that this year.

In regards to the home environment, I've exceeded expectations on the indoors. No painting was done, but lots of clutter was removed. We also rearranged the house and created a new family living space and playroom. It definitely feels like a new home.

And, though we didn't get to the fence this past year, it's okay. I still created a mini sanctuary on the back porch that was wonderful. Thanks to Mom's donation of a swing and bistro table set.

I could've spent more time outdoors. But, at least I made the most of the time I did spend outdoors. :)

I'm going to give a good long thought to those for 2008, and try to set up things to focus on. One thing I've learned in being more aware and living life consciously, is that I only have so many hours in the day. Certain things need to be honored as priorities, and thus, that means that others will need to be pushed aside or on the back burner.

The bonus is that I'm totally okay with this. :)

So, to sum it up, this year - I fell totally in love with my life. Totally. I have witnessed all of the blessings (my hubby, Pook, the house, fabulous friendships, Yes lists, being realistic about what I can and can't do). I have embraced my life, my family, my friends, and allowed myself to be present, aware, and enjoy them. There were some challenges (like our wonderful car repairs to keep our autos running), but the blessings have outweighed them all.

My heart is joy-filled. My mind is open. Compassion for myself and others, is blossoming abundantly. I am filled with gratitude for 2007.

And now, I'm off to ponder my focus for 2008. Hmmmm...

Focus on 2007

There are 4 new things I'm focusing on for 2007:

  • To live consciously
  • To make it a point to enjoy life more
  • To continue to create a home environment that radiates contentment, peace, love, nurturing, and joy
  • To spend more time outdoors

Each of these has various aspects to it, that I'll expand on below.

1. Live consciously.
This is a big category, that encompasses many things for me. I'll try to break them into smaller sections.
  • Be aware of blessings. By making the most of what we have, just being aware of all we have, and working with what we have. Honoring our little family and our home. And, to bask in gratitude and apprecition for those blessings.
  • Be aware of my internal rhythms, and listen to inuition. Make time for quietness, and spiritual reflection - even if it's only 15 minutes. Take a step back to look at the bigger picture.
  • Live more Greenly. Give gifts that can be used, or make donations in the name of others. Start to recycle. Freecycle or donate items when applicable. Get a compost bin, and create compost. Support local farmers. Try to buy things with less packaging, and/or packaging that can be recycled. Bring own bags to store. Continue to determine how to live more greenly (http://www.treehugger.com/)
  • Create a compact pledge that works for us, and following through for at least a month, if not longer.
  • Be aware of how we, as a family, can eat healthier. Try to eat less processed and packaged stuff, by making own breads, soups, and fresh foods. Create healthy snacks by keeping carrots, hummus, and other fruits and veggies on hand and accessible to Pook. Learn how to can our own veggies and the like.
  • Be conscious and aware of spending. Spend wisely, frugaly, and continue to invest in savings. Also, be aware of what we really need, and what we need to buy. What are the necessities? Heaven knows we don't need any more knick knacks or decor!
  • Bless others. Through monatary donations and freecycling.
    Spend more time outside.

2. Enjoy life more; have some fun.

Silly to have to post this, but a big thing for me. Do fun things, do more of what we enjoy, keep a perspective of positivity. Continue to say No to those things (and people) that drain us. Plan a fun vacation. Take care of myself by doing things I enjoy, spending quality time with friends, and doing things that decrease stress (massage, Reiki, diva days...)

3. Continue to create a home environment of contentment, peace, love, nurturing and joy.

Nurture a postive and loving attitude. Show my family I appreciate them by nurturing them with love, good food, and appreciation. Honor those who enter my house - family or friend, and nurture them with respect, good food, and love, and shower them with appreciation.

Honor our house by enhancing it with creativity and love:

  • Indoors: Continue to get rid of clutter (those things that we feel bad/guilty about, things we don't need or like, or have space for) and create more space in our home. Paint the main areas, new curtains for dinning room and living room, new bed for Pook, clear out Pook's room to make room for new kitchen set, repaint basement, set up office/study area in basement, repaint study (this will be later, as when it's repainted, chances are, it'll be turned into a baby room), repaint Pook's room.
  • Outdoors: Create our own Secret Garden of tranquility. Fence, clear out back, put in cement patio, steps to patio, garden, plant an apple tree. Shed, potting area, and compost bin.

*Not all listed above needs to be done at the same time, not all in 2007, though it would be nice to have it all done in 2007. :)

4 Spend more time outdoors.

Walk to the park. Take notice of walking to the car, or from the car to house, or building. Make the most of nice weather. Take pictures to help encourage more walks.

***********************

I know that for some, this is a large list. It helps to just write things out, to get a clear view of things. Next year, I plan to blog more on how we are faring on each of these topics. I may need to edit here and there a bit as well. We shall see!

Make note: This is subject to updates!

Reflections on 2006

Last year, there were five things I decided to focus on. I must say, that I think I did a really good job of staying on target.

1. Continuing to Simplify my life

I continued to declutter and get rid of things we no longer loved nor needed. I think I made a total of at least five trips to the Good Will, and countless friends benefited from stuff we let go of.

In the last few months, I've really been clearing out my thoughts, focusing on the blessings in my life, and what we have. It's been amazing!

We said no. We scheduled weekends of no plans. We definitely did less, and did more of what we enjoy.

In 2007, we'll be continuing along this line, as we pare down to make more room in our home, that we're now staying in.

2. Continuining to improve my lifestyle and eating habits.

We did pretty good the beginning of the year, and have done a fair job through the year. Now, we are slowly working our way back to where we were.

3. Spend wisely and consciously.

We did well on this aspect, too. We've managed to save the most money since we've been married. Next year though, we've got specific house projects we'll be dealing with, but we've realized, that we really don't need anything. There are things we'd like, but we'll need to rearrange things to make more space.

4. Stay in tune with Rhythm; honor and getting to know my inner/intuition.

I'm gradually getting back in touch with myself, as for I while, I got lost. I allowed my knee injury to through me off, and I made excuses. Might need to revisit this in 2007.

5. Continue to connect with appreciation and gratitude.

This has been a big one this year. I've purposely gone out of my way to show my appreciation to others, and to be more appreciative in general. My Thank Yous are truly heartfelt, and I express this as often as I can. Basking in gratitude has been lifechanging for me, and helped me to really appreciate and be aware of the blessings in my life.

All in all, it's been a year of many, many blessings. I am filled with gratitude when I think about things. I've reconnected with people (like Stacie), got to spend time with Phil and see his home (finally), spent quality time with those I love, and bask in the bliss of being a mom.

We didn't move, but I think we've gained an even greater gift by deciding to stay. Ah... bliss.

Focus for 2006

I did decide on things I'd like to focus on for the new year, and I also created affirmations. (We do this as a family each year.) Only this year, we included one for a house. Though we aren't actively looking, we figured we'd put the energy out there and see what happens.

In any case, there are 5 things I've decided to focus on:

1. Continuing to Simpify my life
This means decluttering material, physical, and mental stuff; finding easier ways to do things; doing less, but doing more of what I enjoy; and saying No. This has also resulted in planning ahead for weekends of No Plans.

2. Continuining to improve my lifestyle and eating habits.
This past year I learned what healthy food portions were, realized I'd been eating double those portions, and started taking movement (yoga, walking, etc.) more seriously. I'm also working on focusing on when I'm hungry, versus when I'm stressed to the max.

3. Spend wisely and consciously.
Asking myself if I really need an item, or if it's filling that boredom or stress void. If it doesn't absolutley make my heart sing, forgetta bout it! (Plus, it helps you know, in saving for a new house!)

4. Stay in tune with Rhythm; honor and getting to know my inner/intuition.
Life has it's own rhythm, there's the rhythm of seasons, and my own personal rhythm. All work together and have their own effects. Learning my moods, when I'm energetic and when I'm not, is not only helpful, but very liberating, because I'm not beating myself up on a day when I'm not fully motivated. Plus, it helps me to honor myself and spend time going within each month.

As for the intuition, this ties into the food thing, in the sense that I'm exploring more about myself and how I really feel about things. One of the reasons I hibernate come winter, is so that I can reevaluate myself and really think about how I feel. Sometimes, things get so chaotic, I felt very out-of-touch and make choices I normally wouldn't. So, I've been practicing recognizing that "gut" feeling.

5. Continue to connect with appreciation and gratitude.
Just being appreciative and grateful is life changing. I've been doing it for the last few months, and it's really had an impact. So, I'd like to keep it up.

Don't know how much I'll get to posting over the next few months, as, I'm feeling a strong urge to hibernate. After the last two weeks, the urge to not see anyone or leave the house is strong. Now, if I wasn't working, I could be playing, and cozied up with a pile of good books. Of course, I'd still be watching Da Pook, but... I wouldn't be looking at a computer screen.

Also, as is tradition, we drew cards for the New Year.

I have this Goddess Deck that's uncannily on target (my friends always ask me to draw a card for them each year). For instance, last year, I drew Sulis (Celtic goddess of water) who's message was to spend time around water for healing. I ended up vacationing on and island and spending time in a water spa there. The entire experience totally changed me and my life.

This year, I got two cards: Oonagh and Rhinnanon. According to Oonagh, all is happening in the right time; I'm to take things slowly and easily. I'm being given the opportunity to "ease" into things. And according to Rhinnanon, my dreams will manifest this year. Which, was totally funny, because we'd just affirmed the house right before that. And, according to the fairy cards we have, I'm to "Honor My True Feelings" and be myself.

The connections between these 3 cards were strong, and completely on target, because that is the sense I was getting for this coming year.

So, it'll be very interesting to see where this all goes, eh?
